9 Things I Hope My Sons are Brave Enough to Do

On Halloween night, after a particularly frightening walk up our neighbor’s spookified porch, my 5-year-old son proclaimed, “Mommy, I can’t wait to be bigger because when you’re bigger you’re brave.”

Brave. Huh.

I can think of a lot of things adulthood has given me – cynicism, perspective, wisdom, experience…but just as I suspected, no bravery. And boy, could we all use a shot of bravery…

Once upon a time I made a wish list of all the qualities I was hoping to find in a husband (don’t laugh), today I have a mental wish list of character traits for my sons.

Of all the things I wish for my boys in this life, bravery and kindness top the list. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Take a look at the 9 things I sincerely hope my sons will be brave enough to do – right here!
