Ho-Ho-No! The Staggering Cost of Holiday Shopping

I’ve tried really hard to spend less on the holidays this year.

I cut my Christmas list in half, purchased fewer items for my kids, and snagged killer deals wherever I could. Despite my most valiant frugal efforts this holiday season, I’m still not brave enough to tally up what I’ve spent so far.

When I came upon this infographic, I was like “No way! The average shopper spends over $700 on the holidays?!” People, how are we even paying for this? Especially in these tough economic times! But somehow we are, to the tune of a 4.1 percent expected growth in holiday sales this year.

Lately I’ve been high on the mindset that holidays should be filled with more experiences than gifts. And while gifts are an obvious part of our Christmas tradition, I don’t believe giving or decorating to the tune of  7 Benjamins is necessary – at least not for my family.
