Stage Mom

I always told myself that no matter how adorable or talented my kids grew to be, I would never become a card-carrying member of the Stage Mom Society.

Never say never because this was going to be harder than I thought.

I fight stage mom tendencies like nothing you have ever seen.  You know your kids are amazingly talented, you know strangers stop and comment on the gorgeousness you have created.  I am constantly amazed by my children and nothing gives me greater joy than showing them how proud I am.  However, I also believe in the merits of humility and modesty because no one likes a big fat head.

Last weekend I was at Ikea with my boys and was approached by a talent scout who took particular interest in my eldest.  She just loved him and begged for him to come to an open casting audition.  My son wasn’t digging the idea so I wasn’t going to force him.  For a moment I wondered if we were throwing away a fantastic opportunity for him but soon realized that if his heart wasn’t in it, the opportunity was worth passing up.  Big Daddy P and I decided we needed to continue focusing his energy on opportunities that showcase his passion, art.

My son is 7 years old and has been artistic from the time he could hold a crayon.  He has been in art classes for 2 years and has asked me to share his favorite pieces with my Mommy Friends.  On behalf of my future artist/sniper, with humility in check, I’m proud to share his talent with you!

Our children’s talents are limitless and worthy of discovery and encouragement.  I’m taking my son’s lead on how far he wishes to take his interest in art.  I personally hope his passion continues; I can’t wait to see what he creates to share with the world next!

How do you encourage your children’s talents and passions?  I’d love to hear your creative ideas!

  1. OMG my jaws dropped when I saw those paintings! He has some serious talent and not just for a 7 year old. He just has talent. You must be so proud!

  2. WOW. Those are amazing! I know where my talent is NOT, and it’s visual art….so to know those were created by someone whose age is still in the single digits, well it’s astonishing. Please continue to encourage his development! He’s wonderful :o)

Wow! Those are amazing! Def. keep him going to art classes as long as you can as he can use those talents for multiple things later on in life. Also, it’s always nice being the one the other kids want when it comes to artsy stuff. 🙂

Awesome! I don’t know how you resist exploiting that talent! I would make my child paint murals in my house if she could draw like that.

  9. AMAZING! He is SO talented! Wow! I think once we see our child has a passion for something, our job is just to encourage it, whether that means classes, or a team, or just having stuff around the house they can use. Thanks for sharing his art!

Very true about the supplies; I need to buy stock in a paper company!  Just wonderful that your daughter has a talent in math, and even more wonderful that she has your encouragement to to go even further!

Thanks Betsy and Complicated Mama!  It’s awesome to see them create together too!

  12. Your son is so amazingly talented! I cant even believe a 7 yr old made those pictures! … Your hubby does your cartoons right?…. I guess we know he’s inherited a great talent! 🙂

  13. Kids got GOBS of talent. These all look like “framers” to me. Serious.

  14. My middle son is very talented artistically, too. That is definitely something that can’t be taught! But I think genetics may play a part…Daddy P! My husband is very creative (he works in advertising). My father and brother as well. So maybe that is where my middle one gets it. Great post and beautiful pictures!!I am in the middle of writing one of letting your children be who they are. May be posted by Thurs.

  15. Those drawings are amazing! That is definitely a talent I would encourage!

My kids love to draw. We make sure that the supplies they need are always in the house. We also display their work somewhere in the house.

My daughter also has a talent for math. She has games and books to help her do more. Next year we will encourage her to enter a math competition in school.
