Designer diapers are a new phenomenon I find truly baffling. Last I checked, diapers were intended to collect poop and pee until potty training; when did they become outerwear? While I remain a true believer in stylish functionality as much as the next Mommy Friend, designer diapers still leave me wondering…why?
I can’t speak for everyone but my kids always wore pants. And when they didn’t, I didn’t care what their diaper looked like so long as it was super-absorbent and economical. I’ll go so far as to say their diapers could have had a big bulls-eye on the butt for all I cared, who really saw them anyway? They didn’t need to impress me.

By now you’ve probably seen the denim diapers from Huggies and now Cynthia Rowley is designing diapers for Pampers (in 11 designs!). Cute? Sure. Funny? Maybe. Necessary? Not so much.

I assume designer diapers cost more than the regular diapers because things with style and panache usually do. I happen to believe diapers are expensive enough, especially given the rate babies burns through them. Has my practicality jaded me from the fun and style designer diapers offer? Maybe, then again, if it’s getting pooped on and disposed of, one might not want to spend a lot of money on it. I’d rather spend my money on a stylish children’s outfit I will attempt to keep poop-free at all costs.
What are your thoughts on designer diapers? I’ve gotta know.

I agree with you completely! Seems like a waste of money. I would much rather buy my little girl a fun diaper cover (reusable). Though the commercial for the denim huggies is absolutely adorable 🙂 But am I wrong in thinking that boys at that age don’t go out in just a diaper?

I stumbled across your site from the ParentsConnect Blogging 101!I love the hubby illustrations– so cool that he does those for you.I too don’t get these diapers. I mean how often do I let my baby just sit around in his diaper anyway?! I also don’t get why Pampers made such a big deal about their new diapers being thinner. I didn’t think they were thick to begin with. Plus, I EXPECT that they get thicker when they’re filled up with pee or poo. I mean, is that supposed to bother me?!
I think my kid would miss Elmo too much. He feels comfortable having his friend on his diaper. Don’t think he’d be as secure in plaid.
I definitely think they’re cute, but I’m with you that they seem unnecessary. I actually use cloth diapers with my daughter, so I’ve bought some really cute cloth diapers in different patterns, but I reuse them obviously.
I dunno, though – I think I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t pick up a pack of these if I used disposables…

I guess when my kids are on the therapist’s couch in 20 years, they can say, “It all started when my mom bought the regular, plain old, non-designer diapers…”

Right there with you. If they cost the same or less than my generic diapers due to some amazing coupon/sale scenario, I’d buy the Cynthia Rowley diapers. They are adorable, no question.
Patsy, I never thought about it from the “when their pants sag, it looks like undies instead of diapers” perspective. Interesting idea. I thought of it as a way of earning more money from consumers. We can’t blame the diaper companies for trying!
I agree. Maybe it’s just so that when their pants sag, it looks like undies instead of diapers. As for me, I’d like that extra change in my pocket and have them be babies and look like babies.
I agree, pretty silly and just another way to make money. But hey, Americans seem to love to find more ways to spend money. Which is fine if you have money to burn, but I’d personally never spend any extra on them.
I don’t understand what the big deal is with them to be honest. And I just have to say that the Huggies jean ones – the commercial drives me NUTS! Cute kid, hate the commercial! I can understand some fun designs for cloth diapers but I don’t get the point with disposable. {shrugs shoulders now}
I find these a waste of time and money. Especially the jean diapers, I saw them in Walmart and they were $20! I don’t know who thinks I would spend that kind of money for something my baby will make a mess of! Plus, who lets their baby’s bum just hang out? LOL I have a little girl but evey with a dress on there’s bottoms she wears with it. Im in agreement mommyfriend Lori 🙂
I’m with you! I want cheep crap catchers. ;)A friend of mine keeps going on about how when Luvs put Barney on the diapers she switched brands…but where I was living at the time if I had been so anti-Barney I would have been spending a lot more for diapers that didn’t do so well.
I recently saw the denim diapers at BRU and I must say they are just plain dumb! I have to admit the C.R pink ones are kinda cute, but this mommy friend is not about to spend more on diapers! Only if there’s a great sale and coupon involved, which will make them cheaper than the regular diapers I buy for my daughter!
I agree! I don’t get it… but SOO many families, I guess, have so much to do w/their money they are gonna JUMP ON THIS! When I read the title on Twitter, I thought for sure you were going to be talking about the ACID WASHED, tie die, stretch skinny jeans! Have they made it to your malls yet? Yuk! I had horrible flashbacks of middle school (when that’s all I wore!).
