Unplugged

I’ve been off of work for a week now with a glorious week of vacation ahead.  This is the longest stretch of vacation I’ve had since my maternity leave in 2007 (if you even call that a vacation).  Like many of you, technology rules my life.  I work at a computer 9+ hours a day only to come home and blog however many hours a day.  I’m addicted to Facebook, Twitter and my email.  My relationship with my smart phone is among my most intimate.

In this digital age it seemed natural.  After all, my kids know what #FF means.

I’ve made a concerted effort to unplug on my vacation.  I had enough posts in the cue to step back, drop my smart phone, breathe and engage.  Oh my God, there is a whole world out there.

I had forgotten.  How sad.

I played Memory with my kids uninterrupted.  I let the phone ring and returned calls hours later when I was ready.  I cleaned out my closet (anyone looking for ’90’s flannel?).  I baked cookies instead of 3 meals on a frantic Sunday in preparation for the week ahead.  I spent days in my mismatched jammies, watched Lifetime movies and napped; I actually napped.  Best of all, my eye stopped twitching (thank God, crazy was so last season).

As happy as I am and satisfied as I feel to be a Super Mom, even Super Mom needs to know when to say when.

You know what else?  The world didn’t stop revolving because I wasn’t connected.  In so many ways I was more connected to the things and people that really mattered, imagine that.

Have you unplugged recently?
